for therapists, counselors, coaches and clergy
Often the professional (therapist, clergy, coach) find themselves in a real quandary as to how to work with couples.
Should things be viewed systemically, psychodynamically?, emotionally focused (attachment based), cognitive behaviorally or something eclectic?
How do you “meet” the couple where they are and then help them achieve their goals?
A plethora of research offers many possibilities and many theorists and clinicians offer methods, ideologies and advice on how to work with couples. But no method, technique or perspective offers 100% success with all relationships. So what are some of these limitations?
What is meant by “a relationship?”
What is meant by “intimacy?”
What is meant by “sex, sexuality, Eros, eroticism, passion, etc?”
These questions are extremely important both for the practioner as well as clients. We cannot behave as though we know what these concepts mean to our clients.
Given the wide variety of relationship structures and the intersectionality of identities, these questions are not an easy one to answer but it does give some clues.
It is my contention that a Solution focused or better stated, solution oriented perspective is a great place to start for the novice therapist and a wonderful perspective for the seasoned clinician because of it’s elegance and simplicity.
It is devoid of theoretical underpinnings and instead focuses on what actually has been shown to be effective and aligned with your clients goals.
